NEW SLANT AT ASCI MEETINGS...
ASCI has designated the year 2000 as the "year of the scientist" at our
monthly meetings. First meeting began with Dr. Tom Ettinger,
psychologist/NYU, who presented his collaborative research project on how
the brain interprets visual art. Dr. Ettinger's follow-up letter to ASCI
members whose feedback he felt was valuable to his research model is posted

MARCH- Ned Seeman, father of DNA nanotechnology/NYU, Molecular machines

-As Studio Arts Theme Chair of the upcoming College Art Association( CAA)
2000 conference being held at the New York Hilton from February 23 through
26, ASCI member, Ellen K. Levy is responsible for this conference's
unusually extended focus on relationships among art, science, and
technology. Over 125 panelists will be involved, many ot them members of
ASCI. Levy's solo show of computer animation and paintings opens to the
public at Trans Hudson Gallery from 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, February 26. The
Gallery is located at 416 West 13th Street.
-Athena Tacha will present a talk, "Form and Chaos", at the session
"Structural Intuition in Art and Science" chaired by British art historian
Martin Kemp, during the College Art Association (CAA) meetings (Hilton
Hotel, NYC) on Saturday, Feb. 26, 9:30 - 12 a.m. One of Athena Tacha's
outdoor public art commissions, "Marianthe" (1986), in Fort Myers, FL, is
going to be destroyed on Feb. 6 by the University of South Florida and
Edison Community College who commissioned it and own it. They failed to
maintain it over the past 15 years and they now claim that it is beyond
repair because it was structurally weak. The artist cannot afford to sue
two institutions, even though supported by a contract signed by USF. If

- LECTURE AT YALE...Gabriele Leidloff, German-Jewish video and digital
artist will present work that examines the body by means of video,
installation, and radiograph images, addressing, as Dr. Michael Salcman has
put it," the complimentary and occasionally antagonistic relationship

-As announced in December, the Brooklyn Academy of Music has initiated
"Artists in Multimedia," a two-year partnership with Lucent Technologies in
which BAM-selected artists will work on new-media arts projects with
scientists from Lucent's Bell Labs research division.
- "COPENHAGEN".... IN NEW YORK - Monday, 27 March 2000
Presentations of the basics of quantum mechanics and of the contributions
of Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and others, such as Erwin Schrödinger.
Discussion of the Copenhagen Interpretation and of present views of how the
wave function yields definite states. Introduction to fission. Also,
panels on the historical context and the play itself will take place.

-Digital media installation and performance artist ANDREA POLLI presents
her recent work while in residence at the UCSD Center for Research in
Computing & the Arts (CRCA), through Feb. 12. Polli's work examines the
ways in which the computer and cyberspace are said to mimic physical reality.
